2017 CMD COMMEMORATIONS

In association with the celebration of UN Peacekeepers Day, the 2017 commemorations of Captain Mbaye Diagne took place on 31 May (anniversary of the Captain-s death in Kigali) in Geneva at the Palais des Nations, headquarters to the United Nations Office in Geneva (UNOG).

The event, organized by UNOG in partnership with the Association of Captain Mbaye Diagne for the Culture of Peace, was held in the Human Rights and Alliance of Civilizations Room (the room where the sessions of the UN Human Rights Council are held).

Over 200 former peacekeepers and dozens of school children attended the event.

The bravery and heroism of the Captain were celebrated by the panelists, including the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Prince Zeid Ra’ad Al-Hussein, and Marie-Christine Umuhoza, daughter of Rwandan Prime Minister Agathe Uwilingyimana. Soon after Ms. Uwilingyimana was assassinated on 7 April 1994, the Captain intervened to rescue Ms. Umuhoza and her brothers and sisters.
