After 20 years, the heroic sacrifice of Captain Mbaye Diagne, "the bravest of the brave", is eventually recognized by the Organization of the United Nations that the Captain served until his death on 31 May 1994 in Kigali.

To date, however, the medal could not yet be attributed to any UN staff, because of the high requirements one needs to meet to deserve it. The Association is currently advocating with the UN Department for Peacekeeping Operations to progress on the identification of deserving UN staff members who could be considered for the attribution of the medal and also to sustainably promote the legacy of the Captain by integrating his story of courage in the training curricula for DPKO military and civilian leadership and for the Blue Helmets, in order to promote courageous actions and the protection of civilians amongst peacekeepers.
